A team representing Lincoln School recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at intervals throughout the school year. Click the title to read more.
On April 16th the first graders of Mrs. McGuire and Mrs. O'Flaherty's class visited Hackensack University Medical Center for a wonderful tour of the facility. The class was led by a wonderful tour guide that allowed the student to learn that a visit to the hospital isn't as scary as they may think. The students enjoyed learning about all the instruments used by the nurses and doctors, as well as a visit to the Pediatric Radiology Room where they saw an x ray machine and real x-rays. OOOhs and Ahhhs were heard by all when the class visited the newborn nursery. Many of the students shared stories of also being born at H.U.M.C. The tour ended with a snack of cookies and milk while the students asked questions and shared their favorite parts of the trip.
The students of Mrs. McGuire's 1st Grade Class love exploring books from their new Non Fiction Library. The first graders have begun their new Reading and Writing Workshop Unit of Study - "Nonfiction Readers Learn About the World". The class has been enjoying learning how to locate key facts or information in a text.
The students in Mr. Quiambao’s fourth grade class have been busy brushing up and fine-tuning their math skills through Accelerated Math. Using this computer-based program on Renaissance Learning, students have been assigned skills and objectives based solely from data collected on each student’s STAR Math test results. To add to the excitement of consistent practice and testing of their skills, Mr. Quiambao created a goal to master a certain number of skills and objectives for each individual student. As a result, four students in his fourth grade class completed 100% of their goal and were awarded with a student-teacher pizza luncheon. Click the title to read more.
At the end of the book Mrs. Izen’s fifth graders read, Loser, there is an interesting scene where the main character is picked to be on a football team. Most of the students made fun of this character in the entire book. However, this character refused to leave the game and eventually his name was called to be on one of the teams. This made the main character feel really good about himself. The students in my class talked about the special qualities that make each person unique in their own way. Mrs. Izen’s class decided that we would relate this story to them. As a group, we talked about the many abilities and interests that make each one of them a special person. We wanted to celebrate these qualities and created a class quilt. Each member of the class has a square that is all about them and what makes them special. The quilt is on display outside room 304 in Lincoln School.
Lincoln School students continue to make headlines both in and out of the classroom. As we continue to perform in the classroom, Angelica Castillo is also making national news outside of it. The 5th Grade Youth Power Club, which does community service projects throughout the year, asked the students of Lincoln School to donate toys for Zoey's Holiday Project. Zoey, who was born with cerebral palsy, has spent a lot of time in the hospital. Her parents started Zoey’s Holiday Project as a way to give back to the hospitals which have helped their daughter.
